For items that aren't frequently washed, such as purses, wool or leather items, the strength of these magnets is slightly better without a plastic cover. For items that are frequently washed, our SWP-M is the same magnet with a protective cover. Machine wash cold, dry on low heat.
Choose your size based on the thickness of all material layers between the magnets in your application. Aim for a pull force between 1 and 3 pounds for a nice feel, though the desired strength does depend on the application. This magnet is great for a total material thickness of 1/32" to 1/8".
The table below shows the expected strength when used with a variety of materials. The Pull Force assumes the magnets are separated by two layers of the fabric.
Material | Fabric thickness, single layer [in] | Pull Force [lb] | Comments |
Cotton T-shirt | 0.012 | 3.97 | Strong pull |
Denim/jeans | 0.028 | 2.24 | Firm pull |
Canvas | 0.04 | 1.64 | Good pull |
Leather, 1/16" thick | 0.0625 | 1.02 | Good pull |
Leather, 1/8" thick | 0.125 | 0.4 | Gentle pull |
