How is the steel thickness calculated?

The data and calculations in our steel thickness calculator are based on expected pull forces based on extensive computer simulation and product testing. We don't know of an easy formula we can share to calculate these results

About our steel thickness calculator

While K&J Magnetics offers diametrically magnetized disc, clyinder and ring magnets, our magnet steel thickness calculator only considers discs, cylinders and rings that are magnetized along the cylindrical axis.

Our steel thickness calculator is currently a beta version and is intended only for reference. K&J Magnetics, Inc. will not be held liable for its use. All calculations are approximations and should not be used as the sole source of design data. The factors of your application may change these values considerably. Be sure to test magnets in your configuration.

The steel thickness calculator estimates the pull force of a single magnet stuck to a steel plate of a user-supplied thickness. It considers the effects of thin plates. and estimates the expected pull force and the minimum plate thickness required to realize the full strength of the magnet.

Pull force case 1 calculated in our pull force calculator is the pull force of a single magnet to a steel plate. It assumes that the steel plate is both bigger than the magnet, and thick enough to not become saturated.
